[j-nsp] Single RE-S-X6-64G with "error: Unrecognized command (chassis-control)"

Hi all--

Forgive my ignorance, but I've got an RE-S-X6-64G running in an MX480 (BP3) with an SCBE2, version 15.1R6.7, and it has a chassis-control problem:

root> show chassis environment
error: Unrecognized command (chassis-control)

root> show chassis hardware
error: Unrecognized command (chassis-control)

. . . etc.

The show version command indicates "Model: olive," which leads me to believe I've got a bad/wrong version, but Juniper's website says I'm good to go: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics/reference/general/routing-engine-m-mx-t-series-support-by-chassis.html#sec-mx480-res

And trying to restart chassis-control isn't working. I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Much appreciated.

Hi Dave,
As this RE is not supported in 15.1R this seems legit, so I suppose you'd better install the last 16.1R (as the end of engineering for 15.1 is in 4 months anyway).

No you're not: 15.1F is not 15.1R.

Olive? Are you sure you aren't in a GNS3-based virtual environment router?
I've never seen mention of olive outside of GNS3/Virtual Environment.
Perhaps, this is a learning opportunity from me. Please let me know if
there are times when actually hardware routers show Junos as "olive"

Here's my GNS3 routers...i have the same chassis-control error, and I forget
what it means. I have wondered if I never really set up my olive/vmx
environment completely correct. Also, someone told me that even though I
installed vMX 15.1F3, since it was an early release of vMX, that it still
shows up as "olive" and that if I were to download a newer version of vMX,
that it would no longer show olive. I haven't verified that yet though.

Here's 2 of my gns3-based juniper routers...

***@R6-j> show chassis environment
error: Unrecognized command (chassis-control)

***@R6-j> show version
Hostname: R6-j
Model: olive
JUNOS Base OS boot [12.1R1.9]
...

***@vMX_1001> show chassis environment
error: Unrecognized command (chassis-control)

***@vMX_1001> show version
Hostname: vMX_1001
Model: olive
Junos: 15.1F3.11
...

Since you create an Olive from an M/MX/T release, you know that Junos declares itself an "Olive" if it doesn't recognise a Juniper hardware it knows (well, except for vMX/vSRX/vRR/vWhatever, even if there was a bug in older releases where it nevertheless showed Olive).

Additionally, RE-S-X6-64G IS a virtualised environnement, where Junos runs inside a VM on a Linux host.

The fact is that 15.1R has no support for this config.
