Hello

I have an EX4300 with a EX-UM-4X4SFP Uplink module (with 4x SFP slots) and a dual mode SFP Module that supports 1000Base LX and 10GBase LR. When inserted into the EX4300 the SFP module is always in 10GBase LR mode. Is there any way to configure any or all of the SFP slots to 1000Base?

The official specs claim that the uplink module is dual-mode 10GbE/1GbE:
"Uplink Module Options:
Others: 4-port dual-mode 10GbE/1GbE module with pluggable SFP+/SFP optics"
https://www.juniper.net/us/en/local/pdf/datasheets/1000467-en.pdf

Also, there is this one guy on the internet (tm) who claims that he managed to force an EX4300 into 1000Base mode on the SFP slots.
https://forums.juniper.net/t5/Ethernet-Switching/ex4200-EX-UM-2X4SFP-module-support-1G-10G-or-all-port-4x1g-or/td-p/317240

Any help is highly appreciated.

Regards
Karl

Hi Karl,

Indeed the EX-UM-4X4SFP should be dual-mode capable.
I think it's auto-detecting your dual-mode SFP as 10GBase LR and I'm not
aware of any way to configure this - I think with the particular SFP you're
using, 10GBase LR is the only mode you'll get. IE: You would get 1000Base LX
only with a different SFP.

From:
https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics
/reference/specifications/uplink-module-ex4300.html

"""
The SFP+ uplink module ports can operate either in 10-gigabit or in
1-gigabit mode depending on the transceiver you install in them. The
operating mode for an SFP+ uplink module is shown in the output of the 'show
chassis pic fpc-slot slot number pic-slot slot number' command.
"""

In terms of SFP compatibility, JNPR offer:
https://apps.juniper.net/hct/product/#prd=EX4300

You didn't state whether the SFP you're using was from JNPR or someone else,
and if JNPR, what the P/N is. Can you elaborate?

Niall

Hello Niall,

thank you very much.
I solved the issue by buying a plain old 1000Base LX SFP module, which works flawlessly in EX4300.

Karl
